A fusion of musical duets from Poland (Kapela Hałasów) and Denmark (Klezmerduo).
Historical Bukovina – located between the Carpathians and the middle Dniester – is the quintessence of the history of Central and Eastern Europe. Since the early Middle Ages, it has been a crossroads of trade and cultural routes between Scandinavia and the Black Sea, Rus’, and Western Europe. Slavic, Arab, Jewish, and Armenian merchants traveled through here. Along with them came ideas, religions, traditions, and music. In this cultural melting pot, a local culture open to diverse influences emerged.
All these elements can still be heard today in Bukovina’s music, which is a true “stained glass.” Its colors are created by the sounds of unique instruments – pentatonic shepherd flutes, cimbaloms, drumlas, gardon, baraban, accordion, wind instruments – raw rhythms, and space for improvisation. This music resonates with a world full of meanings, ancient traditions and beliefs, folk magic and mystery, creating a wonderful tribute to nature, life, celebration, and diversity.
Over these ethnic borderlands of Europe, the musicians of Eastwind have for years moved along paths of family and cultural fascination. Their concerts and dance events blend Slavic expressiveness with Scandinavian nostalgia. They also successfully run ethnic music lessons for children and organize intergenerational family gatherings.
